- “The Trees of Long Island” was written by George H. Peters and is dedicated to Mrs. Frank Melville Jr. of Sunwood Estate in Oldfields, Long Island. It was published in 1952 by The Long Island Horticultural Society located at the Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute in Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. The purpose of the book is to be a short account of the history, distribution utilization and significance in the development of the region. It is also the first census of big trees on Long Island. The census include pictures of some of the big trees as well as a list of all the big trees their measurements and where they can be found.
